LFTD 2024 Project: The Docks

Episode 2 takes pace at the docks where the villains do villainous things and the heroes are raiding to stop them. So, there have to be docks. Specifically two docks. One roughly 16″ long and another about 10″ long.

Already have the 16″ dock from Blood & Plunder games. Never got around to painting it, but it’s there and a good enough design to repeat for the smaller dock.

Now realizing I have to be careful with typos in this post…

In order to make the entire thing stand flat and stable I need to make sure the pylons are uniform. Easy enough, just need to make a jig out of scraps. With only one jig it does slow things down, needing to wait for the glue to dry, but it’s not too bad.

When making your jig make sure you know the spacing. My entire substructure is made from tongue depressors and popsicle sticks, so it’s easy enough to lay it out first and then measure for the jig.

Pylons and cross pieces finished. The planks are just coffee stir sticks. Roughly cut to length; this isn’t one of your fancier docks. A little rough and ready is good here.

My design is good, but it does have a flaw. There aren’t a lot of connection points for gluing the pylons. The substructure and the planks, more than enough. But those pylons and cross pieces have a very thin strip for gluing. Had to be careful to not break things.

Also, stir sticks are not flat. And not straight. There was a lot of sorting to ensure the planks looked good due to this warping. I had to break out clamps to help hold the planks to the substructure while the glue dried.

A little craft paint was all that was missing. I kept the paint simple, a few browns and greys. They don’t show that well here in the photos. Nothing overboard. These docks are not the main part of the board and don’t need to draw the eye.

I am almost done with the terrain for Episode 2. The part I’ve been dreading, the actual ground portion, is still to come. Not a part of terrain making I have tackled before, so I’ve held off. Can’t keep waiting, though.
